Models or strategies? on the perception of ambiguous words

چکیده
Models of lexical ambiguity resolution differ mainly with respect to the role played by context in lexical access. In my paper I focus on two opposing views: those of autonomous access models (non-context-oriented) and selective access models (context-oriented). I analyse two types of situations of: a. the activation of a wrong meaning of an ambiguous word unpredictable from both models and b. humour based on puns. Proceeding from my analysis I propose to include (those leading to errors) and consider existing models as strategies, consequently, treating unsuccessful lexical ambiguity resolution as the influence factors or as a selection of the wrong strategy.

متن کاملPhonological abstraction without phonemes in speech perception.
Recent evidence shows that listeners use abstract prelexical units in speech perception. Using the phenomenon of lexical retuning in speech processing, we ask whether those units are necessarily phonemic. Dutch listeners were exposed to a Dutch speaker producing ambiguous phones between the Dutch syllable-final allophones approximant [r] and dark [l]. These ambiguous phones replaced either fina...
متن کاملThe moral pop-out effect: enhanced perceptual awareness of morally relevant stimuli.
People perceive religious and moral iconography in ambiguous objects, ranging from grilled cheese to bird feces. In the current research, we examined whether moral concerns can shape awareness of perceptually ambiguous stimuli. In three experiments, we presented masked moral and non-moral words around the threshold for conscious awareness as part of a lexical decision task. Participants correct...
متن کاملNew Provider Models for Sweden and Spain: Public, Private or Non-profit?; Comment on “Governance, Government, and the Search for New Provider Models”
Sweden and Spain experiment with different provider models to reform healthcare provision. Both models have in common that they extend the role of the for-profit sector in healthcare. As the analysis of Saltman and Duran demonstrates, privatisation is an ambiguous and contested strategy that is used for quite different purposes. In our comment, we emphasize that their analysis leaves questions ...
متن کاملPerceptual learning in speech.
This study demonstrates that listeners use lexical knowledge in perceptual learning of speech sounds. Dutch listeners first made lexical decisions on Dutch words and nonwords. The final fricative of 20 critical words had been replaced by an ambiguous sound, between [f] and [s]. One group of listeners heard ambiguous [f]-final words (e.g., [WItlo?], from witlof, chicory) and unambiguous [s]-fina...
